Substitutes:

Note: You have selected a substitute pet.
The strategy might fail if you use it with this pet instead of the one the strategy creator intended.

The substitute finder looks for these criteria in relation to the original pet:
  • Same family
  • Has the required skills
  • Has the required stats (if specified)
  • Ignores specific breed requirements for the main pet, as breeds can be very different for substitutes

High XP
At least one of the pets for this strategy require the use of a specific breed.
Not every strategy can be bullet proof. This is one of them. You might have to restart it, since there are some random elements that increase the risk of your pets failing. Don't blame them, please!
This strategy is using pets obtainable from the Wow Trading Card Game (TCG) or the auction house for potentially high sums of gold.
This strategy is using pets obtainable only from the WoW In-Game Shop for Battle.net Balance or real money.
Level 1+
You can use this strategy to carry a low level pet to give it experience.
Some instructions are more difficult to follow than others. That's exactly what you might find in this strategy!
Script
The strategy offers a Script that can be used with the Pet Battle Script addon. You can copy the script by clicking on the button to the left of the pets.
At least one pet in the strategy cannot be obtained anymore. If you have it, congrats!
A Strategy Curator found this strategy to be especially helpful and higlighted it with this tag to give it more exposure.
In Dragonflight Patch 10.2, the ability Time Bomb has been changed. This tag is marking strategies using Time Bomb so they can be reviewed.

I would say this works 9 out of 10 times, but I recommend that 5 be the minimum level for your leveling pet. They WILL take some damage during this fight, and if your Unborn dies before the battle is won, your level pet will have to issue a final attack or two.

I used this for years with never a problem. It does cut it close, leaving you feeling like you are "almost losing", but "almost losing" is actually winning. :D

Nothing has changed in the numbers for the abilities used since the Undead tacial nerf, so I took the trip out today to check.

I see you have 2 B/B Valks, and no H/H, so I tested with a B/B. As always, it worked perfectly.

If you believe you followed the instructions, please show how by posting a log, or at the very least a detailed description of where your battle varied from the expectations of the strat.

I dunno about this fight. It's been really sketchy the last few tries. If your Fossilized Hatchling doesn't survive to soak the Heroic Leap then you might as well restart. I've failed at least twice before each win lately. Might be bad luck but I'm starting to think this is just situational. I dunno.

Drefan

wrote on 2023-04-11 20:31:34

Agreed. This fight used to be super easy with this strat but now it seems that RNG is too big a factor.

GCSuns

wrote on 2021-08-29 19:59:14

This strat is amazing, thanks. The one thing I'll say is the Ancient Blessing at the end isn't necessary as the Hatchling dies to Falling Murloc regardless. That said, the strat succeeded whether it was cast or not.

Proconsul

wrote on 2022-06-09 10:56:39

The hatchling doesn't always die at that point.

GCSuns

wrote on 2021-10-30 01:26:09

I edited the above script for anyone who would prefer to use Rook (2,2,1) instead of Unborn Valkyr. Rook can cast Ironskin if Murkimus is in the air.

change(#3) [round=4]
change(#2) [self(#3).active]
use(Haunt:652) [round=1]
use(Ironskin:1758) [enemy.aura(Leaping:839).exists]

Tried it several times today to find out what is going on with that fight, seems like the enemy uses 2 Actions during Round 2, throwing the whole fight around. You need to swap the leveling pet a turn early and then it works out for me

Patch 9.1 TomTom coordinates for all six Draenor Master Tamers using Wowhead map pins and zone numbers (eliminates the need to differentiate between Outland and Draenor). Can use anywhere in the game. No need to be in the same zone or on the same continent.

I've been using a slightly different version of this strategy that involves less swapping.
Same pets, Unborn Val'kyr with 2/*/1 instead of 1/*/1.

Turn 1: Haunt
Unborn Val'kyr "dies," bring in your level pet
Turn 2: Swap to Fossilized Hatchling
Turn 3: BONESTORM
Turn 4: Pass (Fossilized Hatchling gets stunned)
Turn 5: Pass again (Fossilized Hatchling is still stunned)
Turn 6: Ancient Blessing
Turn 7: BONESTORM (Gladiator Murkalot dies in the back)
Turn 8-9: Bone Bite until Gladiator Deathy dies
Turn 10: Ancient Blessing
Turn 11-13: Bone Bite until Fossilized Hatchling dies (can Pass turn 12 if you prefer)
Bring in Unborn Val'kyr
Turn 14+: Shadow Shock

Very rarely, the Fossilized Hatchling may die early if it takes an unfortunate crit. In that case, don't bother with Ancient Blessing during undead round - Bone Bite all the way. The fight could still be winnable by Unborn Val'kyr, but you may need to finish it with your level pet. (edited)

kaelsidhe

It does not work anymore. Not RNG, not even close. I'm not using the script, I"m just following the instructions and on Step 5 when Bonestorm is supposed to kill Murkalot, it's not even close. The rest of the fight cannot succeed after that. I'm guessing something changed.

Gráinne

wrote on 2021-03-12 13:37:41

I did it a couple days ago to level Courage.

Worked fine as usual.

Gráinne

wrote on 2021-03-12 15:20:14

I just tested it again and logged it. Nothing changed.

In rounds 2 through 6, your FH takes

0 + (275 + 40) + 0 + (40) + 509 = 864 damage. Even if they all crit, that's still only 1296, so the FH must still be alive, and so doing full damage that round.

Murkalot takes

222 + (316 + 222) + 222 + 222 + 222 + 316 = 1742 damage from the Haunts and the two BONESTORMS, assuming no crits. That is more than Murkalot's 1481 HP.

So it is arithmetically impossible, even with the worst possible RNG crits, for the FH not to kill Murkalot.

Are you sure you didn't use Unholy Ascension instead of Haunt?

After Scooter dies Bring in Mr. Grubs using Leap to be faster than the opponent and Consume to regenerate health and damage the opponent, you may apply Acidic Goo but it isn't necessary, just Leap when the opponent is airborne to maintain the speed buff, its pretty much a 100% stratategy

Tried twice, using the script and the fight failed, then I tried one time following the instructions, and I won. Dont know if the script is wonky or if it was just bad RNG

There is some RNG in this. You can try bringing back the valkyr after deathy comes in, cast Curse of Doom. He will do his special attack on the valkyr, and after it is dead you bring in your fossilized hatchling, use ancient blessing and after that Bone Bite, which should hit the same time as the valkyr's Curse, killing it. At least that worked for me after failing twice following the script exactly :)

Some very minor tweaks makes this fight go a little faster at ~11 rounds:
Change Unborn Val'kyr to [2 * 1] and Fossilized Hatching to [1 2 2]
TDScript:

change(#3) [enemy.aura(213).exists & !self(#3).played]
use(652) [round=1]
use(649)
use(214) [!enemy.aura(213).exists]
use(648)
use(422)
change(#2)
change(#1)

Doing this fight multiple times a week for a few years now and have never had a failure. I only have an H/H Val'kyr though so I don't know if it still works with other breeds. I also like getting to use Death and Decay which isn't an ability that gets used much (and makes me miss that old spell graphic on my DK ;( )

Gráinne

Most strats don't ALWAYS work.

A really bad string of RNG - you miss several times in a Sandstorm or Darkness, or the tamer gets a sting of crits - can derail most strats. This is something I find many people, who are not exposed to many strats, or who don't ever analyse the failure points arithmetically, don't need to realise ... and then it happens to them, and they tend to think that it is specific to the failure they had. I've identified several times a strat can fail in the case of taking two unlucky crits in a row, at just the right place - a 1 in 400 chance.

And then of course there are the people who use the wrong moves, and don't realise it.

This is the strat I've used myself since WoD. It hasn't ever failed for me, and I haven't analysed it, but I can believe that the Haunt nerf might cause the Valk to die too soon, if using a B/B Valk, combined with a couple of unlucky crits. Maybe, Or maybe you skipped a step.

You see, if you bring in the level pet only on the round specified, it literally cannot die, since the stun it takes on that round does no damage.

akesi#1338

wrote on 2020-03-20 21:44:48

For the people who are saying this doesn't work -- I'm wondering if they're accidentally using Unholy Ascension instead of Haunt? The two abilities look pretty similar (valkyrie dies, etc) but Haunt continues to do damage on Murkalot when he gets moved to the back row, making him easy to finish off with Bonestorm. And moreover, when the Haunt effect expires the valkyrie comes back to life, so she can finish off the last murloc, whereas with Unholy Ascension she stays dead. I just made that mistake earlier (didn't realize I had the wrong ability up) and it did indeed fail hard.

2 Ghastly Kids, 2/2/1 and a carry pet (any level) will work. Start with Ethereal on Murkalot and disease bit until health is below 840 to kill with Ghastly Bite. Deathy Always clobbers 2nd turn and on cooldown so Ghostly Bite telegraphically when the cooldown on Clobber is 1 or use Ethereal when Clobber is up (cooldown 0 ready for use). Also when you proc undead passive it's free Ghostly Bite cause there is no next turn to be stunned at. (edited)

Still works. One thing I'd change though, is that once Gladiator Murkimus comes in, keep using Bone Bite until he flies up in the air. Use Ancient Blessing then, rather than whenever it's available, and the fossilized Hatchling can finish off Gladiator Murkimus without needing to go back to the Val'kyr.

That'[s odd, because I did a round of Draenor a couple of weeks ago, and it still worled for me.

Please tell us EXACTLY where the strat deviated from expectations. The addon Pet Battle Log Keeper would be ideal, or a screenshot of the Pet Battle log, but even a pointer to the place where it went wrong would allow somebody to check it out.

Also, what breed of Valk were you using? I'm pretty sure I have a H/H slotted for this one.

Gráinne

wrote on 2019-04-17 03:35:37

I was out that way today, so I thought I'd check, using a B/B Valk. Nope, still worked perfectly.

The B/B Valk does get brought to zero by the Heroic Leap in the last round, (which a H/H won't, barring crits) but at that point, Gladiator Murkimus has only 288 HP left. Shadow Slash does a minimum of (393*.75) damage in the Undead round, which is 294 or 295 depending on rounding, and plenty to finish the battle.

If you were using Shadow Shock instead of Shadow Slash and got unlucky with a low hit, it could fail. That's pretty low probability, but possible. So be sure you're using Shadow Slash.

If Gladiator Murkalot's original Falling Murloc had crit in Round 1, it would still not have killed the B/B Valk, so would not make any difference.

skarpethinn

wrote on 2019-06-29 13:30:04

i have now lost this 5 times in a row with this strategy - i've tried a couple of different variations, including Berendain's suggestion of keeping "Ancient Blessing" until Gladiator Murkimus leaps into the air, but i always end up with the Unborn Valkyr with <500HP and Murkimus doing Heroic Leap on that round - meaning the Valkyr gets killed, resurrects for one round, but Murkimus has too many HP left for the Valkyr's one hit left to kill it, so you lose, cos by then all you've got left is you level pet...

Proconsul wrote on 2019-06-29 15:51:45

@ skarpethinn Agreed. I used to use a B/B UBV with Shadow Shock, and I never used Ancient Blessing with the Fossilised Hatchling - I simply used Bonebite. I saw a 95% + win with that combo. Using the strat here felt considerably weaker: I survived simply because I was levelling a Lvl 16 moth, which I relied on to finish off Murkimus. I realise that a single bad outcome is unreliable, so I shall try this recommended strat a few more times before commenting further.

Moara

wrote on 2019-07-14 20:49:43

Where this strat fails for me sometimes is when my Fossilized Hatchling has taken any crits anywhere. When Murkimus does his opening Counterstrike, if my Hatchling dies then, that means the UBV (B/B) is taking the Heroic Leap damage, and if Murkimus isn't low enough to be one shot with Shadow Slash, then I have my leveling pet (usually level 1 lately) to try to survive Murkimus. That doesn't usually end well. XD

However, I've always been able to repeat the battle and try again, and have it work as expected. I can look to upload a log of some sort, if that'd help!

2. Shadow Slash (until Deathly dies and yes, just pass when stunned)
3. when Mulkalot comes back in, Death and Decay (or Shadow Slash) and that removes the shield
4. Curse of Doom
5. Murimus comes in, either Shadow Slash or Death and Decay

at this point, your first pet has killed 2 of the rivals

Now, bring in your leveling pet and then quickly switch to Ghastly Kid
6. Diseased Bite until he flies up
7. Etheral to avoid the hit
8. Diseased Bite until his health under 840
9. Ghostly Bite

8. Fossilized Hatchling dies, immortal round. Bone Bite.

I don't know if this a breed-dependent strat but it didn't work for me. When my level 13 pet switched in, Gladiator Deathy used Scorched Earth, which would've killed any level 1 pet. Also, my FH died before the third pet and the UV died not too long afterwards. Ancient Blessing is a necessity for my team.

When you fight the last pet (Gladiator Murkimus) my Ancient Blessing is up the round before he flies up, so I alternated to use Bone Bite 2x, and then Ancient Blessing when he's in the air. If I don't get too many crits from the weather effect, often my hatchling just kills Murkimus and I don't need to use Valkyr

I, as usual, don't have the pets that people use in their strategies. I used Unborn Val'kyr, Tiny Apparition and Ghostly skull. I used curse of doom whenever I could from Unborn Val'kyr and Tiny apparition and otherwise the spells that cause the most damage Shadow Shock and ghostly bite and shiphon life otherwise. Unborn Val'kyr was the only one left and around 60 health. So, maybe it was good luck.

Katijia wrote on 2017-03-30 17:32:44

Unclear why, after Gladiator Deathy dies, you would continue to use Bonestorm as a damage dealer? On a single target, Bone Bite does more damage and doesn't sacrifice any of the Fossilized Hatchling's health. I guess it has no material impact on the outcome of the fight, it just seems weird.

Anonymous wrote on 2017-02-10 01:44:07

After Deathy dies it says to move to turn 6 and repeat.

Turn 6 is Ancient Blessing.

My ancient blessing is ALWAYS on cooldown still at this point. So I can never cast it that round.

I still beat it fine with this strategy. My pet dies and I bring back in Unborn Val'kyr who finishes it off.

But idk why it doesn't work as said no matter how many times I do the fight, I follow the directions perfectly and it is always on cooldown still. Weird

Oona wrote on 2017-03-16 21:46:29

To me it doesn't make sense to go back to turn 5. Bonestorm does less overall damage at this point and costs you 10% health. I always go:

Turn 9 - Bone Bite
Then Move to turn 5 etc.

This way, I don't always need Unborn Val'kyr unless I am unlucky.

Ben wrote on 2017-03-20 13:57:21

Same. Bone storm is cooler but takes longer and does less damage to a single opponent.

Saintgabrial wrote on 2016-12-02 17:56:58

I'm testing this change (Ancient Blessing over Death and Decay) over and over (2hrs now) to figure out why the change and if it really works better. So far it's not better if not worse, for It can fail and the old way never failed.

I'm assuming this change is to keep the Fossilized Hatchling alive as long as possible and maybe shorten the fight. So far the amount of turns is not much different and the old way never failed if you follow it to the letter. Also repeating turn 5 when there is only one enemy pet alive is not worth the 10% health cost to use while making it harder to keep your hatchling alive longer. Most of the time the hatchling dies too soon.

Gimilkhad wrote on 2016-12-20 13:24:07

Not sure what the old way was exactly. I use this team, but here is the order that works for me without fail:
1. Haunt
2. Swap to leveling pet
3. Swap to Fossilized hatchling
4. BONESTORM
5. Bone Bite until the next
6. BONESTORM
7. Bite until Hatchling dies
8. Swap back to Val'kyr
9. Shadow Shock until enemies are dead

Fosilized hatchling does get stunned once, but it's never a problem for me.

Morbink wrote on 2016-12-22 20:42:26

Works for me every time. Only change I make is when Murkimus comes in, I do:

1. Bone Bite
2. Bone Bite

4. Bone Bite - Murkimus dies.

Haven't needed to finish off with Unborn Valk since I switched to that order.

Anonymous wrote on 2017-01-01 21:40:47

Didn't even worry about trying the new version since the Death and Decay version from before never failed anyway.

Beefriedrice wrote on 2017-02-11 15:21:15

I might have oversimplified my explanation. I follow the bonestorm > Ancient blessing > bone bite > bone bite rotation until after the second bonestorm (when murkalot dies). The two uses of ancient blessing give him just enough HP to last until Murkimus's jump. Sometimes Murkimus dies that round, but worst case scenario is that the Val'kyr has most of its health left to finish the job if Murkimus is still up at that point.

I've been using the strategy for months, it seems. Recently I decided to use Ancient Blessing (2) for my Fossilized Hatchling. I use it in place of Death and Decay, continue swapping to my leveling pet and back to Fossilized Hatchling. When the 3rd Murlock comes out (with no crits) you are able to bone bite him twice. While the 3rd Murlock is in the air, put up Ancient Blessing before he attacks which leaves you with anywhere from 15-20 HP on your Fossilized Hatchling. Just enough for one more bone bite without bringing back your Unborn.

I had so much trouble with this fight in the beginning and I love your strategy guides. Thank you for making much pet battle experiences so much less dreadful!

Same general strat but very consistent, change the Fossilized Hatchling to (2/1/2). Open the same first 2 turns, then on turn three Ancient Blessing, Turn 4 and 5 switch in your level pet and back to the hatchling, then do a rotation of bonestorm, ancient blessing, bone bite, bone bite on repeat until your hatchling dies, then finish off whats left with the val'kyr.
